Action painting

As an ode to Jackson Pollock, and because I have an empty wall space in need of some art, we did some action painting with the boys this weekend.  I was so excited for this.  From picking up random items for texture and interest to telling the boys that they were encouraged to get as messy as they would like, we were all set and ready to go!  No one ended up rolling around on the canvas, but the paint found its way to their bodies somehow.

It took Aidan a while to get in the zone, but he finally did.  I quickly realized that it was much more fun for him to work straight from the tubes of paint instead of squeezing some out on a plate for him.  It was wonderful to see him engross himself in his work.

Oliver didn’t get as focused as Aidan did, but he still did his share of art.  He let me help him make a few foot prints and enjoyed using the whisk.  He wanted to squeeze the tubes, but they were a little too empty by the time he got around to trying.  When I thought the larger painting was complete, Ollie went over and rubbed his hands all over it.  Hooray!  He left his mark.

  • Love it!! I have wanted to do a family art project like this for a long time, but I really like the idea of just the kids going at it. Now I’m thinking it would be perfect for decorating the game room we’ll have in the new house! Did you paint the pink canvas first, or did you find it that color?

  • Thanks! It was really fun for all of us. I bought the canvas white and painted it. I’ve seen TX art supply sell black ones before, though.
